The Berlin Festival is back. This year at two different locations, the Flughafen Tempelhof with all the bands (check the complete line up here) and the Club Xberg at Arena.

Here's the official info and the line up for Club Xberg:

Berlin would certainly not be Berlin if we already sounded the bell for the last round at midnight. Under the banner Club Xberg, you can revel in and enjoy more of the city of Berlin. We’ll continue the whole shebang with gigs, DJ sets and performances at the great venue Arena Berlin, Arena Club, Glashaus, and Badeschiff until the wee hours. Basically, you will get two days of fantastic festival vibes and club feeling galore in one event.

Am 3.9. tut sich das Berliner Label EXPLOITED um SHIR KHAN das erste Mal mit den Partyveranstaltern von YUM YUM (SCHOWI&PALINA) zusammen, die kürzlich erst in Kooperation mit Deutschlands grösstem Fashionblog "LES MADS" eine grosse Sause geschmissen haben. Nach Veranstaltungen im Cookies und der Ritterbutzke, geht es diesmal ins Picknick. Wenn das Wetter gut ist, dann werden 2 Outdoor-Bereiche geöffnet inklusive kleinen Überraschungen: fliegende Herzen in der Luft und noch einige andere Spässe warten auf euch.
Das jüngste Pferd im Stall "Exploited" sind die beiden Münchener Jason Heath & Manuel Garay, die unter dem Namen "Cocolores" bisher vornehmlich das Münchener Nachtleben unsicher gemacht haben.
Kürzlich ist das Berliner Label "Exploited" aufmerksam geworden und veröffentlicht die Debut-EP "Heart Quest" von den Jungs von Coco, die Ende August erscheint und bereits von Leuten wie Maya Jane Coles, Trickski, oder DJ Mehdi supported wird.

Was macht die Jungs so besonders? Einige sagen - die Beiden wären viel zu jung, um authentischen 90er Jahre House zu machen, andere wiederum sehen in Ihnen die deutsche Schnittstelle zu so Acts wie "Azari&III". Kein Wunder dann auch, dass die ehemalige Hercules &Love Affair Sängerin "Nomi Ruiz" nach einem Remix anfragte.
Die Mischung machts: "Cocolores" vereinen Chicago und New York House mit einer Prise Urban Funkiness und Disco.
Die australische DJ-Bloggerin "Michelle Owens" war von "Cocolores" so angetan, das wir sie gleich als Special Guest zur Recordrelease eingeladen haben.

Natürlich spielen auch "Shir Khan" und unser Lieblingsresident "Jack Tennis".

Auf dem anderen Floor sind mit "Schowi" und "Palina Power" 2 alte Freunde mit im Boot. Als DJ-Team sind sie unschlagbar. Das haben sie schon auf ihren unzähligen Yum Yum Partys bewiesen.
Um die Achse nach München zu vervollständigen, haben sie "Chrome" aus Monaco di Baviera eingeladen. Triple Trouble sozusagen. Nicht zu vergessen - everybodys darling "Irving Jr".
Und damit wir auch ja nicht müde werden, singen "Laing" ein Ständchen. Es wird ein Fest! Morgens immer munter:)

Ed Banger's remix for MGMT is one of my favorite songs this year. Unfortunately it is hard to play out in a club, because in it's 12 minute freaked out trip-beauty there are only 3 minutes in the middle with that lazy wonderful "Breakbot-Style" dance-beat.

Once a year, the inhabitants of Berlin districts Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain meet up at the cutesy towers of Oberbaum bridge and proceed to hurl vegetables at each other in an epic battle royale for supremacy. Ben Mono (Kreuzberg) and Lars Moston (Friedrichshain), in a valiant attempt to appease the waring factions, met several times in the studio and threw beats, bass and samples at each other, in order to determine the winner once and for all. To no avail. The result was a draw. However, the good news is that their combined projectiles to make the bassline move your spine.

After last year’s “sunkissed”-mix, here I go again with my favorite new Lazer-Synth-Electro-Disco songs of the last months and the next months. As usual it’s full of Australians, who invented that sound!
As most clever readers might have noticed already, this is only part 1, so there should be a part 2 (around 2015…). There were just too many great songs, that i wanted to include.
This one starts really very lazy and speeds up a bit during the set (not too much), part 2 will continue from there and will end up faster (but still with a lazy feeling).

Cut Copy-Take Me Over Thee Loving Hand Remix by Tim Goldsworthy by extramusicnew

The Flight Facilities version (remember their 2010 smasher "Crave you"?) is a fluffy disco-pop affair, to make people bounce and smile on the dancefloor. But Tim Goldsworthy's remix (not only the co-founder of two of the most influential record labels ever: Mo' Wax and DFA) gives the original version his typical deep, psychedelic make-over, which explodes after some minutes into the mix. Great remix package, it also includes an Azari & III remix, but that's not my alley. Cut Copy's third album "Zonoscope" will be out in Germany on february 11th (that's a change to the last one, which was simply dumped in the garbage by their German record-company... you know who you are!), and - even better - our friends from Melt Booking have taken over their fate in Germany. Cut Copy will play their first ever Berlin show (and some more dates) on march 16th in Lido. And as if that wasn't enough to make the clouds go away here in Berlin, they are also already confirmed for this years Melt Festival (15.7. - 17.7.2011).

I still think it was a very weak year for "real" club music (except Duck Sauce). I missed the surprises! I just hate it when music gets functional, but for many other djs that is not an insult, but a quality in club-music. Weird...., but maybe that says more about me than about this year's club-music. Instead I totally re-fell for funky electro-pop, that i can play out in clubs and listen to at home. I'm a Popper and will always be!

"Baby I'm yours" by our favorite frensh producer Breakbot had everything to become a world summer smash hit (even an amazing video), but of course it didn't. But i saw happy faces everywhere i played it, and in my eyes it is the biggest success, that in Maputo/Mozambique somebody came to me after i played it, and thanked me.

With his imprint Deadfish, Italian producer Mowgli has created a very fresh new housesound. His creations are fun filled, quirky house music with the influx of ethnic samples.

SAVAGE SKULLS
Savage Skulls compose fast-paced, elegant and generally ridiculous dance music in their shared studio, and are enjoying some well- deserved international success. Stay tuned for an exciting 2011 that will see them releasing an EP on Exploited and Sound Pellegrino, as well as unveiling a brand new collaborative project with Crookers called Dr. Gonzo.

GNUCCI BANANA
A girl from Yugoslavia makes dancefloor bangers fusing the hype of turbofolk and the jivey pizaz of township house with dancehall and hip-hop. Gnucci Banana's been blowing minds with her sassy raps on tracks as well as her wild stage antics.

SHIR KHAN
Besides being the head honcho of Exploited, Shir Khan is an accomplished DJ and remixer, not to mention promoter of his Berlin Night "Berlin Battery" and host of his weekly show on Radio Fritz. After a small break he is back in full effect - remixing as well as working on his first solo tracks to be heard in early 2011 finally!

JACK TENNIS
Jack Tennis was resident DJ at "Rio" and "Scala", two parties, who literally revolutionized the music scene in Berlin. Also, he works as a producer and remixer with releases on munichs hipster label "Gomma" or "What What Records". His sound always combines electronic beats peppered with some soul and funk. Jack Tennis is - alongside DJ Supermarkt and Shir Khan - a member of the music blog Berlin Battery.

ULTRAMOODEM
Ultramoodem has been the resident VJ of the Berlin Battery Partys and has contributed many video flicks for Exploited. Expect some Vanilla Ice-DIY-over the top-Styles.

And indeed this is meant to be some sort of exchange program bringing Berlin Art&Music to the Lab of Brazil.

BERLIN FESTIVAL feat. Berlin Battery

It was clear from the start: Berlin Festival’s line-up wasn’t quite completed just yet: Our “travel agents” let us dangle for six whole weeks to announce the final additions to this year’s line-up at Tempelhof Airport.

However, it was well worth it, as we present striking rock’n’roll guests of honour: the reunited Gang Of Four (“To Hell With Poverty”) – pretty much the reference point for all British bands of the last ten years – will perform their only show in Germany of 2010 at Tempelhof Airport!
Another delightful festival performer that we are very much looking forward to: Edwyn Collins is back! After his long and severe illness, the indie icon (Orange Juice, “A Girl Like You”) is about to release a brand-new album in September and invited some friends to support him. We hope, of course, that Collins will be performing his Berlin Festival gig with just a little help from his friends, namely members of Franz Ferdinand, The Drums, The Smiths and many more who recorded the album with him.
The musical journey goes on: Tahiti 80 from France will deliver grand pop sound, soul and indie rock. A trip to the coastal strips of France – downright perfect for Berlin Festival. The Californian equivalent will be flown in to the German capital as well: The Morning Benders are about to make an appearance.

>From Reykjavík, Iceland, the magical Amiina will also travel to Berlin. They have been accompanying Sigur Rós on tour for quite a while. Amiina will perform their brand-new songs in Tempelhof: elfish classical electro folk tunes at its best.
Only a short trip away, the boys surrounding Enno Bunger will begin their journey to Berlin in Northern Germany: smart lyrics and “at least five great hits” (Intro) are part of their luggage. Please unpack immediately on arrival!

However, our travel guide Conny Opper, co-founder of Berlin Festival, will take all visitors not only on a musical journey but on a cultural tour as well:
“It was clear from the start: an urban festival has to be accompanied by an urban art concept that will excitingly transform Tempelhof Airport in order to reveal the creativity and open-mindedness of Berlin. Since last year’s art projects were a big issue, this year’s Hangar Art Trail will enhance the emphasis on art even further. Gerrit Starczewski will present pictures of his nakedHEART project shot at Melt! Festival 2010. Action Painting Club will implement its project "t∆pc-mandala-constructions" live at the festival grounds while Nomad is about to ‘remix’ his graffiti walls. Paul Snowden, on the other hand, is once again responsible for the whole Berlin Festival artwork, and Robert Knoke is about to exhibit his fantastic portrait series of musicians and artists. Last but not least, Crystal Mafia will launch decent photo booth action galore…!

Of course, the legendary Mobile Disko will make its festival appearance with even more features than last year. This time, the boys of the Berlin Battery Crew feat. Shir Khan, DJ Supermarkt, and Jack Tennis will rock the Disko. Berlin’s Sick Girls will present their first mix album (live as well). Hugo Capablanca will be presenting his new project Los Massieras (Bananamania Records). There’s even more to see and hear. So you won’t just be able to look forward to Berlin Festival’s music performances but an overall audio-visual festival experience!”

I'm a big fan of Jens Lekman for years now. What a nice idea of him to make us HAPPY with a dj-mix of a very diffrent kind! This is romantic, but clever, and very creative, especially when the mix travels smoothly between 60's waltzes and african music! Best summer mix this year, by MILES AND MILES!

This is what Jens Lekman says about his mix:

"I got the opportunity to remix my favourite song from Au Revoir Simone's beautiful album Still Night, Still Light. While listening to the song I realised how nice it'd be to transform their straight 4/4 time synthpop into a whirlwind waltz or maybe a barcarole if you will. It took a long time to chop up all the syllables and the tiny tiny samples, but I think the result got the song into a whole swirling new direction.

While making the remix, my mind started working in 3/4 and 6/8 time. I started looking around for tracks in that time signature to make a mix, I wasn't intending to but I couldn't help it. It was all a big swirl. After a while I heard it everywhere. In soul ballads, in polyrhythmical african pop, in old movies. In the ocean waves tumbling in against the shore, in the beat of a lovers heart. One two three, one two three..."

Remember Breakbot? Of course you do. We fell in love with his HAPPY RABBIT-7inch Single 3 years ago which was released on the great label MOSHI MOSHI. We also invited him to our Berlin Battery Party at Cookies when only a few people knew of him. Now Breakbot is back in town....signed to Ed Banger Records...and still makes us smile for his great productions. Even greater also our friend Siriusmo did a remix for him...ok enough Chit Chat. Hi friends. Since I have collected so many DJ-mixes of mine in the past and still do my weekly radioshow, I decided to launch a personal SHIR KHAN Podcast.
I will update this podcast weekly with fresh mixes of mine but also upload some old stuff. Expect to hear Radiosessions, Liverecordings from Clubs, Classic Mixes of mine + some Guestmixes from Friends. You can directly sign up via I-Tunes and always stay in touch with Shir Khan's sound:)
Furthermore, I have also launched a labelpodcast for my label: Exploited. You will hear mainly mixes of artists that have made a release or a remix on Exploited (first up are SIRIUSMO, LORENZ RHODE, MALENTE&DEX, CONSISTENT),but you can also expect to have some friends featured on there who we just appreciate as musicans, friends, djs, record-collectors.

I just love that mixture of synth-disco with indie-dream-pop, that has been coming out of nowhere (well, actually mostly from Australia) since last year.

This dj-mix is the result of a long night in Picknick Club Berlin. made me feel good to play that sound, and people went mad for it (no surprise, after i tortured them for 2 hours with slick 70s softrock-disco). I reconstructed the mix at home, as far as i could remember...(sorry)

I am a bit tired of today's club music, because it misses a good portion of soul. Here you can drown in it: Funky Love Music!

JARVIS COCKER has been a "hidden" hippie all those years. But on PULP's last album "we love life" (R.I.P.) he crowned his wisdom with these beautiful lyrics:

Now he produced a "dj-mix" for The National Trust, which is maybe the first mix without.... music! It is just nature sounds from the british countryside. It is aimed to clear your ears from all that ipod rubbish. Great idea, Mr Cocker.

Not long ago we (Exploited Records) got a message from "Waltz Industries", a young international company of electronic music videos.
The canadian director Martin Waltz, based in L.A. and Toronto, who is going to direct his first feature-length film in Hollywood in a few months and already worked with a lot of projects (music videos, advertisements, shorts...) and also famous names such as Chris Cunningham liked Siriusmo so much that he did this video for free for him. Actually the images were originally supposed to be for a short movie but werent used in the end. So Martin Waltz made a music video for Siriusmo's classic anthem "Wow". We were really happy to receive this - though we must admit that somehow this is not the offical version even if you thought so.

I did a mix for my homie Mathias Modica from Munk. This is his new single LA MUSICA which is out on GOMMA via Beatport now.
Guess what - Karl Lagerfeld used my remix in his first short film "Remember Now". Its so far nearly my biggest remix I guess - even if its very deep and most of you probably didnt expect this. Already getting props from Luciano, Laurent Garnier, Ellen Alien, Luna City Express, Djuma Soundsystem, Zombie Disco Squad, Renaissance Man and many more.
